What size umbrella do I need?

Go about 4 to 5 feet wider than your table. A 6 to 7.5 ft umbrella suits a bistro table for two, 9 ft covers a 48 to 60 inch table for four to six, and 10 to 11 ft (or a rectangle) covers longer tables for six to eight. For a sofa, sectional or pool chaises, a 10 to 13 ft cantilever reaches over without a pole in the way.

Market or cantilever umbrella?

A market umbrella stands through the center of a dining table, so it is the simplest, most stable choice for dining. A cantilever hangs from an arm on the side, so it can shade a lounge area or a spot with no table, and most rotate and tilt to follow the sun.

How heavy should the base be?

For a market umbrella through a table, plan on at least 50 lbs for 7.5 to 9 ft and 70 lbs or more for 10 to 11 ft. A freestanding umbrella with no table needs roughly double that. Cantilevers use their own weighted base, usually 150 lbs or more. Tell us your umbrella and we will match the right base.

Wood or aluminum?

Wood and teak frames give a warm, classic look and usually open with a pulley. Aluminum is lighter, never rusts and offers crank lifts, push-button and auto tilt. Both last for years outdoors when closed in high wind.

What canopy fabric is best?

Solution-dyed acrylics such as Sunbrella hold their color in strong sun and resist mildew. Ask us for free fabric swatches before you choose a color.

Can I leave my umbrella open in the wind?

Close it whenever the wind picks up and when you are away. Even commercial-grade umbrellas are designed to be closed in strong gusts, and a cover keeps the canopy clean through the off-season.
