Lloyd Loom vs. All-Weather Wicker: What Makes Lloyd Flanders Different

2 min read By Emmett & Allison

Lloyd Flanders is America's original wicker maker, and it still weaves by hand in Menominee, Michigan. What many shoppers do not realize is that it makes two different kinds of wicker. Knowing the difference makes choosing a collection much easier.

Lloyd Loom: the patented original

In 1917 Marshall B. Lloyd patented a new way to make wicker, and Lloyd Flanders still makes it in the same facility where the process was developed. Cellulose strands are woven into a wicker fabric around aluminum stakes encased in loom fiber, giving the tight, even, almost upholstered weave Lloyd Loom is known for. Each piece is then finished with two coats of tough, flexible Durium paint.

All-weather vinyl wicker

Lloyd Flanders' all-weather wicker is 100% virgin vinyl with no added fillers, with UV inhibitors to protect it from the sun and prevent excessive fading. It is hand-woven over welded aluminum frames that resist corrosion. The color is in the vinyl itself, so each collection has its own woven color rather than a painted finish.
