Built-In vs Freestanding Grill: Which Is Right for Your Backyard?

2 min read By Emmett & Allison

Couple cooking on a Blaze LTE PRO 32 inch gas grill on its stainless cart

Many of the grills we sell are the same grill head sold two ways: built into an island, or mounted on a matching cart. The cooking is identical. What changes is cost, flexibility and how permanent your setup is.

Choose freestanding if...

  • You want to start cooking without any construction.
  • You rent, or may move the grill to a different spot later.
  • You want storage built in: carts include cabinet space for tools or a propane tank.

Choose built-in if...

  • You are planning a full outdoor kitchen with counters, storage and refrigeration.
  • You want the clean, permanent look of a grill set into stone or stainless.
  • You plan to add side burners, a griddle or a pizza oven alongside.

The best of both: start on a cart

Because the head is the same, a grill on a cart can become the centerpiece of an island later. On our grill pages a Configuration switch shows both versions and their prices side by side, for Blaze, Solaire and Lion grills sold both ways. For example, the Blaze Premium LTE+ 32 is $2,499 as a built-in head and $3,248 on its cart.

Frequently asked questions

Is a built-in grill better than a freestanding one?
Not for cooking. When the head is the same model, performance is identical. Built-in is about the look and the full-kitchen layout; freestanding is about flexibility.
Can I put a freestanding grill into an island later?
If it is a built-in head on a cart, usually yes. Ask us about the specific model and we'll confirm the head and cut-out.
Do freestanding grills need assembly?
Usually some light assembly of the cart. Each product page lists what's included.
Which is more affordable?
The built-in head alone costs less than the head plus cart, but an island adds construction cost. A grill on a cart is usually the lowest total cost to start cooking.
