Dining, Balcony or Bar Height? Choosing the Right Outdoor Table
Outdoor tables come in three main heights, and picking the right one changes how a space feels. Here is how they compare.
| Height | Table | Chair seat | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dining | about 29" | about 18" | Everyday meals, most patios |
| Balcony (counter) | about 34–36" | about 24–26" | Decks and balconies with railings, beside a kitchen counter |
| Bar | about 40–42" | about 28–30" | Outdoor bars and kitchens, standing parties |
Dining height
The standard. It is the most comfortable for long meals and the easiest for kids and older guests. Shop dining tables.

Balcony height
Balcony (counter) height tables sit about six inches taller than dining, so when you are seated you can see over a deck railing instead of looking at it. They pair with balcony chairs or counter stools. Shop balcony height tables.
Bar height
The tallest option, ideal for an outdoor bar or next to an outdoor kitchen, and for gatherings where people come and go. Pair with bar stools. Shop bar tables.

Tip: aim for about 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the table top at any height.
