How to Size an Outdoor Dining Table for 2, 4, 6 or 8
The most common question we get about dining sets is simple: how big a table do I need? Here is the quick guide we use with customers.
Start with 24 inches per person
Plan on about 24 inches of table edge for each diner, and 30 inches if you prefer roomy arm chairs. Then leave at least 36 inches between the table edge and any wall, railing or step so chairs can slide back, and 48 inches where people will walk behind seated guests.
| Table size | Seats |
|---|---|
| 30" round or square | 2 |
| 36"–42" round or square | 4 |
| 48" round | 4–6 |
| 54"–60" round | 6 |
| 36" x 64" rectangle | 6 |
| 42" x 84" rectangle | 6–8 |
| 42" x 120" extension table | 8–10 |

Round, square or rectangular?
- Round tables keep conversation easy and fit well in square spaces and under a center umbrella.
- Square tables feel intimate for four and line up neatly against a wall or railing.
- Rectangular tables seat the most people in a narrow space and suit long patios and outdoor kitchens.
