Wrought iron, the Woodard way

Woodard began in Owosso, Michigan in 1866 and turned to metal outdoor furniture in the 1930s. Its wrought iron soon filled American terraces, in ads that promised furniture "romantic as a moonlit garden." Briarwood, Reed, Terrace and Jax carry that craft forward, still handcrafted in Owosso.

ThenWoodard advertisements, 1940s–50s

The Chatelaine Group, made "for the terrace"
The Mayfield Collection after a morning shower

Why wrought iron

Heavy, handmade and built to stay

Woodard has handcrafted outdoor furniture in the USA for over 150 years. Here is what wrought iron does best.

Stays put in the wind

Iron is far heavier than aluminum, so chairs and sofas hold their place on windy patios, porches and rooftops.

Powder-coated finishes

Every frame is powder-coated in Woodard's finishes. Wash with warm soapy water and touch up scratches promptly to keep it protected.

Made in Owosso, Michigan

Formed, welded and finished by hand in Michigan, with Woodard's 15-year structural frame warranty.

Comfort your way

Iron mesh seats you can use as is, or plush cushions in over 100 Woodard fabrics, including Sunbrella.

Four wrought iron collections

Which Woodard wrought iron is yours?

All four are handcrafted by Woodard in Owosso, Michigan. They differ in style, seat and the pieces in each line.

Wrought iron questions

Frequently asked questions

Will wrought iron rust?

Woodard powder-coats every iron frame, which seals the metal. Iron can rust where that coating is scratched or chipped, so Woodard's advice is to touch up scratches promptly: sand lightly, then apply thin coats of touch-up paint.

Is it heavy? Will it blow around?

Wrought iron is much heavier than aluminum, which is why it holds its place in the wind. The trade-off: larger pieces such as sofas and sectionals take two people to move.

How do I care for it, and what about winter?

Clean frames with warm soapy water; a fine automotive wax keeps the gloss on smooth finishes. In winter, bring cushions inside or store them dry, and cover or store frames to protect the finish.

Do I need cushions?

Briarwood has iron mesh seats and backs you can use without cushions, with seat or seat-and-back cushions as an option. Reed, Terrace and Jax seating comes with cushions in your choice of over 100 Woodard fabrics.

How long does it take, and what does delivery cost?

Woodard wrought iron is made to order in the finish and fabric you choose. We confirm the build time when you order and keep you updated through delivery. Standard delivery is free, and white-glove delivery is free on orders of $7,500 or more.

Wrought iron or aluminum?

Choose wrought iron for weight, a classic look and a frame that stays put. Choose aluminum (Woodard Cortland, Andover and the cast collections) if you want lighter pieces that are easy to rearrange. See every Woodard collection.

Can I see finishes and fabrics before I order?

Yes. We send free fabric samples and finish chips. Contact us and tell us which colors you're considering.

Planning a wrought iron patio?

Tell us about your space. We'll help you choose the collection, finish and cushions, and send free swatches.
